Crews and scullers often try to get in a trial run of the three-mile Head Of The Charles curvilinear rowing course, prior to competing in their event. With this year's expanded race schedule, practicing on the course will no longer be possible on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Coaches and rowers need to be aware the Regatta course now has new practice times. Rowers need to plan their practice time accordingly!
Friday, October 21, 2005
The Regatta course is open for practice before sunrise on Friday morning (for boats using navigation lights). The course is closed at 6:00 PM sharp.
Between 1:15 PM - 2:15 PM the final half-mile of the HOCR course will be temporarily closed to all boats, due to Virgin Atlantic Airways 'Row Jet Set, Row' sprint that afternoon. Boats do not need to leave the water while the sprint occurs, however they cannot 'pass through' the sprint area-located between Eliot Bridge and the Finish Line-until that event has ended.
ALL boats MUST be off the Regatta course by 6:00 PM, or risk being assessed a penalty or disqualification.
In areas where there are no buoys-as the racecourse is being set-up on Friday-boats should keep to the right side of the river (coxswain's view).
Saturday, October 22, 2005
There are NO morning practice times available on the Charles River during Regatta weekend-both Saturday and Sunday mornings-due to increased number of race events.
The Regatta course will be open for practice rows on Saturday afternoon at approximately 4:00 PM (after event #12W Championship Singles - Women is concluded).
Boats must launch before 5:30 PM and MUST be off the water by 6:00 PM, or risk being accessed a penalty or disqualification.
Boats must keep to the right (coxswain's view) of the orange buoys at all times during the weekend. Published traffic patterns should be observed during practice as well as during races.
Sunday, October 23, 2005
There are NO morning practice times on the Charles River on Sunday morning. Racing begins at 7:45 AM.
Coxswain's Tour & Clinic
It is strongly recommended that coxswains familiarize themselves with the course and the rules of Head Of The Charles. A Coxswain's Tour is scheduled Friday at 1:45 PM. A comprehensive Coxswain's Clinic is also available both Friday at 12:00 noon, and Saturday at 8:00 AM. For details go to http://hocr.org/competitors/coxswain_clinic.asp
Fair warning
Any boat showing a disregard for safety at any time during Regatta weekend-including practice-will be given a 60-second penalty or may be disqualified by HOCR Race Committee. Safety violations may include (and not limited to): not following the published traffic patterns, or not following the instructions from the Marshals and Dock Masters.
